An ambulance window was "shattered" on Friday evening as an 88-year-old woman was being driven to hospital.

The incident happened just before 7.15pm on Carshalton High Street.

Sam Barrett-Cross called the ambulance after her grandmother was feeling unwell and getting sick.

She told Sutton Guardian that the ambulance took 45 minutes to an hour to arrive on what she said must have been a busy night.

On the way to hospital the window on the drivers side was suddenly shattered.

Sam, 35, recalled: "All of a sudden it sounded like something really heavy fell. Then I heard a crumbling noise.

"It was a scare. Thankfully my grandmother is ok. She is still in hospital.

"The medics were really good and they tried to keep us calm. They were even quite shocked that someone would throw something at an ambulance."

Assistant director of operations for the London Ambulance Service, Paul Gibson, told Sutton Guardian: "There can be no reason for anyone to deliberately target any of our vehicles or our staff in such a mindless way.

β€œIt was very lucky that no one was hurt, but we would urge anyone with any information to contact the police.”

A spokesman added: "A window of an ambulance carrying a patient was shattered after apparently being hit by an object.

"Neither the crew or the patient were hurt following the incident but a second ambulance was needed to take the patient to hospital and the vehicle had to be taken off the road to be repaired."
