An MP for Carshalton and Wallington has expressed his frustration after the biggest rail fare increase in five years was announced.

In January, UK rail fares will rise by 3.4 per cent because of soaring inflation rates since the vote on Brexit.

Liberal Democrat MP, Tom Brake, commented: "Hard working commuters in Carshalton and Wallington are learning the news that they face yet another big hike in their travel costs.

"It really is a kick in the teeth for those who hand over a great deal of their hard-earned cash each year to get on a train, which is often running late, dirty and overcrowded.

"The government could do more to help hard pressed commuters by freezing fares, but it is simply choosing not to so."

Next year an annual Oyster travel card between zones 1 and 5 will cost £2,328.
