GCSE performance by Sutton's secondary school pupils was well above the national average, according to the latest figures published by the Government.

Schools meeting the criteria have achieved an average Attainment 8 score of 56.2, above the national average of 44.6.

Attainment 8 is a new way of calculating pupil achievement.

It measures the achievement of a pupil across eight qualifications, with mathematics and English given extra weight.

A Sutton Council spokesman said: “These are a new set of measures, so we can't compare previous years with this. But compared with other schools nationally, Sutton is a good place to be educated at both primary and secondary age.”

Wilson’s School, in Mollison Drive, was Sutton’s best-performing school state school with 78.9, closely followed by Wallington High School for Girls, in Woodcote Road, at 75.2.

Nonsuch High School for Girls headteacher Amy Cavilla said: “We are delighted to get such a high Attainment 8 score.

"The students deserve this recognition for their hard work and commitment, supported by their parents and our expert and dedicated staff add tremendous value on top of that.

"We are really pleased with how well students fared in the new English and Maths GCSEs, with English outcomes being our best ever at GCSE.

“We are particularly proud of our Progress 8 score of 1.13 which shows that over the 5 years since students started at our school, we have added an extra GCSE grade and a bit of value on top of the results our aspiring students were already predicted to achieve given their high starting points in Year 7.”
