A Sutton restaurant has been denied permission for a late-night licence to sell alcohol until 2.30am.

The owners of Noor Jahan Tandoori Bar in Brighton Road wanted to extend its hours until 2.30am seven days a week.

But after hearing from three objecting residents, a ward councillor, and the licensing sub-committee on January 24, it's only allowed to keep selling alcohol until 1am on premises and 1.30am for consumption off premises.

One resident had written in support of the application while police did not object and the committee heard that the restaurant had been open until 1.30am since 2005 with no complaints.

The restaurant is within the Sutton Town Centre Cumulative Impact Zone (CIZ), which means there is a presumption of refusal or grant subject to limitations unless the applicant can demonstrate that the granting of the license would not negatively impact upon any of the council's licensing objectives.

As part of its conditions, the restaurant's owners will have to draw up a noise management plan, keep its windows closed after 11pm and only allow two smokers outside after 11pm.

Customers will only be able to order alcohol with 'substantial food' and only an equivalent of two bottles a customer to take away.
