The bizarre British Parliamentary tradition of a charity pancake race had its 21st run on Shrove Tuesday and was aired on TV in places are far-flung as Japan.

Despite the sterling efforts of Sutton and Cheam MP Paul Scully, the Parliament Team missed out to arch-rivals the Media Team at the Rehab Parliamentary Pancake Race 2018.

In a time of five minutes and 25 seconds, the Media Team was first with pan and pancake past the post on February 13.

Mr Scully said: “We all felt a bit flat after being battered by the Media team, who I guess will pan us in their newspapers later.

“But it was just a bit of fun for a great cause, the Rehab Group who work with 20,000 disabled and disadvantaged people across the country.”

The race aims to raise awareness of the Rehab disability charity, which provides training, employment, health and social care services to more than 6,000 disabled people and those at a disadvantage in the labour market throughout the UK.

Mo Flynn, chief executive of the Rehab Group, said: “This year’s anniversary reflects our ongoing work supporting people with acquired brain injury to regain the key to unlocking the potential in their own lives.

“We are especially grateful for the support shown by the members of the Houses of Parliament and the media, for not taking themselves too seriously, and for showing their fun sides for a good cause. They really are good eggs.”
