Many of us use social media platforms every day, but do we really know who can see our profile information?

Since allegations surfaced that research company Cambridge Analytica misused our Facebook data, people have expressed concerns about their online privacy.

However, there are steps you can take to make your data more secure.

To prevent third-party platforms from accessing our data, you can change your settings on the Facebook app.

To do this, you need to:

1. Log into Facebook and go to 'App settings'

2. Deselect every piece of information you don't want the app to access. This could include family, religious views, bio or posts on your timeline

Other steps you can take to protect your privacy are:

- Never sign into Facebook through online games and quizzes - instead log on directly on the site.

- Never 'like' posts on a product services page.

Of course, there is only one way to guarantee your data will be safe from third parties, and that is unfortunately to leave Facebook.

But for now, these steps will help limit what you share with third parties on social media.
