Woodmansterne Road has seen the highest number of pothole repairs in the borough of Sutton since April 2014, according to Sutton Council.

Figures obtained from the council by Sutton Guardian show Woodmansterne Road was closely followed by Beddington Lane (43) and Sutton Common Road (40).

Sutton Council has spent £2.58 million on repairing potholes – at an average expenditure of £645,608 per year – since April 1, 2014, but says this comprises a very small amount of its annual budget.

A Sutton Council spokesman said: “We have a duty to maintain public roads and the highway network as set out in national codes of practice. Last year we repaired over 3,000 potholes at a cost of around £700,000.

“We repair potholes to help ensure the roads remain safe. The cost of pothole repairs varies each year according to conditions and last year would have accounted for around 0.5 percent of the council's annual budget.”

The data was found under the Environmental Information Regulations (EIR) Act 2004’s legislation.

A total of 61 pothole-related compensation claims have been made since 2015, with third-party payments being made on five of the claims for personal injury and property damage.

While the council has paid out £3,175.68 following the claims, the awards for them were made prior to the commencement of any legal proceedings.

So far, 14,257 potholes have been reported in roads and streets managed by the council since the beginning of the 2014/15 financial year.
