Did you know that most people are cleaning their teeth with urine and faeces, your phone is dirtier than a toilet and mattresses are so heavy because they are filled with sweat?

Here are the hygiene horrors you may or may not have heard about and everything you need to know about them:

Toothbrushes

When you flush the toilet, urine and feacal matter can spray up to six feet across your bathroom. So if you are one of those people who never puts the lid down, you could be brushing your teeth with your own waste. (Nice!)

Unless you are rich and your bathroom is as big as the Queen’s, chances are you leave your toothbrushes at least a few feet away from your toilet.

Did you also know that you should get a new toothbrush every three to six months? They build up millions of oral bacteria.

Makeup brushes

This is another gross one. You should be cleaning your brushes and sponges at least once a week because among the bacteria living in the bristles and sponge is streptococcus. This can lead to strep throat, scarlet fever and impetigo. If you are suddenly suffering from acne or pimples, your brushes and sponges could be why.

Mobile phones

We take our phones everywhere with us and of course they pick up all the germs we come into contact with, but few people think to clean them. These need wiping at least once a week with antibacterial wipes to get rid of the build up of bacteria and makeup. If you are getting spots, this could be the issue.

And lastly - Mattresses

If you look after your mattress it can last for years but you will need to do a few things to keep it from developing lots of bad bacteria. You should turn your mattress every six months and get a new mattress every seven years. Over time your mattress can become heavy from dead skin, gallons of sweat and millions of dust mites so you can hoover your mattress or send it to a professional cleaner to stop illness.

Bit gross, eh?
