An annual summer community festival which was forced to stop due to a lack of funding is back on for its 10th anniversary.

The St Helier Music and Community Festival (SHMCF) will return on June 30 after the possibility of a 2018 edition was thrown into doubt amid financial problems.

However, following a committee meeting which was held earlier this year – comprising of people and businesses from within surrounding areas – the volunteer-led festival is now back on.

Susan Peters, chair of the new SHMCF committee, said: “I believe this festival is a family event and have always enjoyed attending over the years, to see it end would be incredibly sad for every member of the local community.”

Income which was received to keep the event ongoing stopped coming in, forcing new ways to fundraise the money required.

The January committee meeting worked out that £8,000 was needed for the SHMCF to run successfully, and prompted action to obtain the licenses needed.

While stall organisers have been asked to pay £15 to set up for the first time, the situation was explained to them and this appears to have been generally accepted ahead of the return.

Patricia Sawyer, the committee’s treasurer, said: “This will be a well-organised, and a great day out for all of the community with lots to do and lots of information stalls.

“For me personally, running a charity [Friendly Hands] I have been attending since the start and have seen this Festival grow and grow.

“Now with the music as well what more can we ask for.”

It’s said more than 50 charities – ranging in size from a couple volunteers to larger operations – use the event to help promote their causes in the community.

Meanwhile, activities are put on to encourage families to attend and this year will have celebrity guests and lookalikes, musical performances on a main stage, and a range of food from around the world.

Now it's back on to celebrate its 10th anniversary since beginning in the summer of 2008.

Karin Flower, Celeb FC founder, said: “I am delighted to have been asked to assist with the organising of this year’s SHMCF, as being part of Celeb FC, small UK charities and community groups are close to our heart.

“This will be a fully inclusive event, with something for everyone.”

The SHMCF will be held on the St Helier Open Space, next to the David Weir Leisure Centre in Middleton Road (SM5 1SL), from 11am to 6pm on June 30.
