More than £30,000 has been donated to charity by the Cheam and Sutton Rotary Club as a night was held to cap off the year.

Money has been given to charities at cheque presentation evenings this year, with the latest at Sutton Holiday Inn, in Gibson Road, on June 26.

Recipients include the Cheam Day Centre, Sutton and Croydon MS (Multiple Sclerosis) Therapy Centre, Sutton Alzheimer’s Centre, Sutton Mencap, and Sutton Young Carers.

Howard Smith, Cheam and Sutton Rotary Club's outgoing president, said: “We have raised well over £30,000 this year and we have had a great time doing it.

“I don’t think I have ever known a year when everybody has been so ready to say yes to whatever scheme your council came up with, no matter how madcap.”

The first cheque presentation evening was at the end of January, with money being donated to charities following activities being held over Christmas.

Mr Smith closed the evening by presenting his wife, Helen, with some flowers in praise of her support during his year of presidency.

He will now be replaced as president by Colin Myerscough for the 2018/19 year, who has chosen the slogan “be the inspiration”.
