Plans to redevelop a former Superdrug headquarters base in Beddington Lane are set to be discussed at a Sutton Council meeting soon.

The site was the home of the health and beauty retailer for nearly 40 years before they moved to further into Croydon last February.

Now Maizelands and Arringford Limited want to build a new industrial unit to provide nearly 2,150 sq m for “flexible employment purposes”.

This would also include 89 car parking spaces and 16 motorcycle and bicycle spaces.

In the planning application, it reads: “This development represents an opportunity to create a high quality sustainable development to suit the needs of future occupiers and meet market demand.

“The proposed development will make efficient and effective use of the site, which has been vacant for a number of years.

“It is therefore considered that this development accords with the policy provisions within the adopted development plan and formed a sustainable form of development that will not give rise to any unacceptable impacts.

“Planning permission should therefore be granted without delay.”

Although the potential occupier of the site has not been revealed, the application has been “tailored to meet their requirements”.

They are seeking a larger service yard area and also require permission to operate on site 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Because of this, it’s expected construction will begin “at the earliest available opportunity” if planning permission is given.

Superdrug announced the move to its new head office, a 55,000 sq ft building in Sydenham Road, during February 2017.

Since then the buildings on the previous site have been knocked down to make way for a new development.

At the time, Jo Mackie, Superdrug’s customer and people director, said it was a “huge move for the business”.

Sutton Council’s planning committee will deliberate the plans at their next meeting on September 5 at the authority’s civic offices in St Nicholas Way.
