An appeal has been launched after a Wimbledon jewellers was robbed in broad daylight by four men armed with pickaxes and knives.

The attack took place just before 1pm on September 12 when the four male suspects, travelling on two motorbikes, approached the store in Church Road.

With one bike parked outside the shop, the other drove into the front door.

Two suspects entered then entered the shop carrying hammers and pickaxes before smashing the cabinets and stealing a more than £80,000 worth of jewellery.

Meanwhile, the two other men remained outside keeping a look out.

They held up large knives and bottles in an attempt to make the shop workers believe they were armed with acid.

The suspects then fled towards Wimbledon Park.

Both motorbikes were found abandoned a short while later on Wimbledon Common and were recovered by officers.

All four suspects are believed to be men and at the time of the incident they were wearing dark tracksuits and gloves with motorbike helmets.

No arrests have been made and detailed enquiries continue.

DC Rex Jude from the South West Command Unit said: “This was a violent and terrifying ordeal during broad daylight.

“Thankfully no one was injured but a quantity of high value jewellery, worth in excess of £80,000 was stolen.

“I would urge anyone with information or who witnessed the incident to get in touch.”
