Delays have cleared in Purley after Smitham Bottom Lane was reopened.
The road, part of the A237, had been closed both ways between the A2022 Little Woodcote Lane and Woodcote Valley Road following an accident at around 6am.
Two cars are believed to have collided in Smitham Bottom Lane near the junction with Woodcote Village.
According to firefighters one man had to be cut free of his red Citreon.
The two drivers were both taken to St Helier Hospital by ambulance.
Commuters suffered agonising delays with one reporting it took her an hour to complete the normal ten minute journey between Coulsdon and Purley.
The road was reopened at around 10am.
