A teen who collapsed outside Lunar House after being knifed during a fight in Croydon town centre is fighting for his life in hospital.

It is thought Daniel Dokubo, 19, was stabbed in Chapel Walk, but staggered through the Whitgift Centre to the Border and Immigration Agency building in Wellesley Road with a knife still embedded in his chest.

“I will exercise my influence on the police to try and make Croydon safer for the public.”

Councillor Steve O’Connell

An air ambulance helicopter landed yards from the scene as concerned shoppers and residents looked on. Paramedics tried desperately to stem the flow of blood before placing him on a stretcher and taking him to hospital, where his condition was said to be serious.

The broad daylight attack was the latest in a long line of stabbings and shootings that are blighting Croydon's reputation.

It is thought he followed his attackers before collapsing in a pool of blood close to the Home Office building.

It came less than a week after a 16-year-old was stabbed minutes after appearing at Croydon's youth court in Barclay Road.

His attacker brazenly walked into the court building after knifing the youth under his arm to announce he had just carried out the attack. A youth was later arrested and bailed.

The council's crime spokesman, Councillor Steve O'Connell, said more needed to be done to stop teens carrying deadly weapons.

He told the Croydon Guardian: "Too many young people are carrying knives as a matter of course.

"These offences need to be looked at much more seriously if we are to try and tackle them.

"They are increasing the danger to the public and the people involved. People carrying out these crimes are ruining lives and must be stopped.

"I will exercise my influence on the police to try and make Croydon safer for the public."

A police spokesman confirmed the teen was taken to hospital after being stabbed. Officers from Croydon's CID are investigating and have appealed for witnesses to come forward.

The male attacker was mixed-race, about 5ft 11in, with a scar on the right side of his face.

Anyone with information should call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

What is up with the youth of today, i am not too old and i remember when things were sorted out down the dirt track after school using fists, but thats where it ended. No-one died, no was injured (if you dont included someones pride!). Whilst it is not fair to tar everyone with the same brush, if it keep someone from dieing then it is worth looking at all youths as troublemakers regardless of background and crack down on all of them. Random searches, confiscation of properties oh and did i forget to mention, banging up the parents of kids that commit crime, that might jerk these lazy adults into action so that the law abiding citizens of croydon dont have to put up the spawn of hell they produced and actually take a active role in parenting rather than leave it up to croydon police to sort them out!

I saw the guy on the floor outside, forensics are there now, it was pretty bad.

Their cowards that think that a knife makes them a man, clip round the ear now and again would sort him out!

I'm 24 and even when I was in school, it wasn't like this, we'd have fights, but it'd be fists and no real damage done. It's fashionable to carry a 'Shank' etc, they're absolute idiots who get off making peoples lives a misery. You can try and get the parents but let's face it, their from a certain community who think no matter what they or they're children do, they're always the victim. Tell that to the Mother of the kid in hospital.

Fred, coulsdon says...
5:17pm Tue 1 Apr 08

Hardly surprising is it. Dysfunctional families who dont make time to be with their kids. Teachers not allowed to discipline kids. Result is that they become lawless and have no respect for their fellow man. OK, as teenagers we all pushed authority but we knew the line. These feral kids have no respect for their parents, school or the law. So hopefully the trendy liberals are happy with the society they have helped produce. The Government can also take some blame for moving away from family values. Remember 1997 and Cool Britannia? Since then the 'must have everything now' mentality has been the norm. The result is that if you dont get what you want, steal , injure or kill to get it.

I am sick to death of people constantly slagging off Croydon. Yeah I agree that it is not what it used to be but look around, society is changing and people are just not giving a **** about anything or anyone else! Yes this is another fatally injured youth probably at the wrong place at the wrong time but how does anybody even know that the culprits were from Croydon and not from outside (which if you read most of the reports on crime in Croydon they are from other areas)! I have lived in Croydon all my life and yet it only seems to have been the last couple of years that it has gone so far downhill! All people are looking for is someone to blame and at the end of the day, young people are just out of control and will stop at nothing! They all know the law can't touch them and when they do get to the age where something can be done, they know that prison is an easy ride and most of the time providing a better life inside than they have on the outside!
I actually can't believe how far this lad managed to go before he collapsed! My thoughts are with his family and friends and let's hope it's not murder!

When I was in my teens if you'd used a knife on anyone everybody would think you were a complete w@nker who couldn't handle yourself without one! People would say "What a t0sser!" not respect them as a big man. In fact this attacker, like all the rest, is a total w@nker!

I was so shocked and very puzzled to hear what happend today. I work at Lunar House my self and saw loads of police. i was on the 8th floor looking outside the window to see the helicopter landed out side the building of where i work. only 10 min later i heard what happend toothe teen boy it is getting so bad you cannot stop an wonder if you are safe when you leave in the morning always looking over your shoulder.the area where we live are getting so bad its getting to the point that people will be to scared to walk out of there house in the morning. to many young people are losing there live though knife attack. what is happening to world and what is gordon brown doing about. do we have to wear knife proof vest to keep our self safe from knife attackers. MPs how many more live are we going to lose before another knife victum strikes again

Mags, Kent says...
8:03pm Tue 1 Apr 08

Proposals are being made for knife and gun detectors in schools. This is quite amusing as I would imagine the perpetrators don't attend school and are hardly ever, if ever at all, at home. Therefore Parental influence is useless as well. They are obviously cowards when they can only use knives and guns. Give them less publicity and that might not appeal to them.

I work in Croydon but stopped living there years ago. Quite frankly this is scary, gangs fighting in broad daylight early in the morning resulting in a stabbing. It is no wonder people are getting scared. I don't know what the answer is, perhaps except to crack down hard on gang violence. We are going the way of US style ghangs and it is frightening.

11:15pm Tue 1 Apr 08

I was appalled to hear what had happened outside in my neighbourhood. If these people like killing so much why don't they just join the army? If the government can glorify fighting and war, then i guess it's OK to kill each other everywhere. These kids learn from the elders. Why can't we just execute the parents and electricute the kids? Or better still execute the kids as well as the parents and the distant relative can pay a fine?

concerned, thornton heath says...
11:21pm Tue 1 Apr 08

i no this guy and it is not a result of parents or teachers because i know them and they have told d that he is not on the right path. it's easy to comment when you don't know the truth or haven't bothered to find out. It's a shame that croydon has fallen so badly and these things are becoming so regular but the point is you commenting on here is not making a difference. If you feel that strongly, do something about it, get out there and talk to the youth, find out whats going on and what help they need. After all they're just people- or let me guess, that's down to the parents and teachers too?? You want to blame them yet you dont try to support them.

Until you get the police arresting EVERY one who carries a knife and a mimimum term of 2 years inside, this will contnue - observe the results of soft policing on the streets.
Banning use of hoodies would be a good start as such kids couldn't hide then. But none of this will happen so it'll only get worse . Sad but true.

Yes, it is changing, in something of a unique social experiment which is seeing a First-World society being eroded into that of a Third-World country.

Wonder how long it will take before our "representatives" in Westminster admit the whole project has been an abysmal failure?

What happened to good old fashioned discipline? It never did me any harm! the fact that you cant smack your kids for being naughty any more means they get away with murder! Lets hope this one does'nt end up being a murder inquiry! Croydon has definately gone down hill in the last few years and I know one thing.... I wont be bringing my children up around here, which to be honest I think is rather sad. you only have to google Croydon Stabbing to see the numerous pages that come up thereafter. I was very moved by yesterdays goings on seeing as it could have happened to any one of us and the fact it happened under the building where I work. I have to admire the work of the helicopter ambulance - faultless!
I hope that the young boy that was stabbed somehow pulls through this and my thoughts and indeed prayers are with him and his family.
Whilst writing this I have just been advised that according to the Sun newspaper all this was over a burger? if thats the case then all I have to say is disgusting! these kids if old enough need to get out there into the community and get themselves a job like everyone else that has to earn a living! oh.... and why is there no barrier or guard around what is supposedly seen to be a forensic evidence cone on the entrance to the whitgift centre by Macdonalds. it might be quiet now but what will happen when the shoppers arrive! come on croydon police! this should be guarded!!!!

I was down the gym yesterday afternoon discussing this matter and the youth of today and he raised a good point he found on his travels around the world. In St Lucia they virtually banned rap music, the youth are forced to listen to country and western music and take part in line dancing. When he questioned someone about this strange behaviour, they said they try to actively discourage listen to any music with aggressive lyrics. He also went onto say that the local youths are less trouble now and the island as a whole is a nice place to be.....bring on "willie nelson" i say!

Judges are not using strong sentencing to discourage gun and knife crime. Their petty sentences handed out for serious crime is:

1. Encouraging more crime.
2. Leaving law abiding citizens health and risk.
3. Making our streets unsafe and unrecognisable.
4. Disrespecting the hard work of our police force who through inconsistent sentencing find themselves dealing with the same offenders over and over again.

Arfur Towcrate, Staffycher says...

Until we see discipline back in schools, tougher sentances and proper parenting this country will never stand a chance.
Regardless of what the do gooders say if my child was to misbehave she would be warned, do it again she would be smacked. If she misbehaved at school and smacking was allowed & she got smacked she would get smacked again when she came home.
Thats how it was when I was growing up and we had none of this crap going on then.

11:16am Wed 2 Apr 08

I'm friends with a person who knows this boy and I'm absolutely devastated to hear that yet another young man is fighting for his life for no reason. He didn't go to war, he's not fighting for his country but yet he is one of the hundreds of boys targeted by thugs. It would seem that the youth of today are fighting their own war, fighting to survive almost. And it makes me sick to my stomach to think that I could be next, my brother could be next, my friend could be next. The question is, when will the day come when we can walk around the streets of London without fearing for our lives. When will people honour human life? When is it going to all end? I'm 18 years old, I study politics at uni, i have a loving family, but to think that someone could take that all away in a split second makes me want to mourn for the generations to come. What is OUR government doing to protect us? How many more CHILDREN have to lose their lives for the voice of the people to be heard? Surely, enough is enough! May God have mercy on all of us if these disgraceful acts continue. I guess soon enough there will be no more voices left.

Doug Humperson, Croydon says...
11:30am Wed 2 Apr 08

I've lived in Croydon for nearly 60 years. Its been going downhill for many years, but the last 10 years has seen a dramatic fall in the way people treat each other. A stronger figure at the helm of our police force would go some way in recovering a seriously bad problem. Get tough with crime is the ONLY answer. If this continues I know of another two ratepayers who will be moving out of the borough for good.

Ricky, Sheen says...

Why is it that on the BBC Have Your Say topic of banning kids from leaving school at lunchtime, everyone says 'stop all these bans', yet here we all want action against yobs?

lee, croydon says...
12:41pm Wed 2 Apr 08

I work for the Home Office and saw this take place yesterday. As long as the government are going to supply these kids with an excuse for their actions "oh, its peer pressure" or "these kids just have nothing else to do" or "Blame the parents as they are only the product of their own environment" Kids will continue to attack, rape, stab and shoot each other. If these so call "bad boys" want to carry weapons, give them an assualt rifle and ship them off for two years national service. If they want to be a hero on the streets, give them a medal when/if they manage to return from their national service. Maybe 24 months of dodging bullets and picking up the remains of their friends will help sort them out. I also feel that the government need to abolish PCSO's and make them all police officers. Putting PSCO's on the street is as good as putting a librarian on the street. The kids have NO respect for them as the government give them no level of repect. Seeing a PCSO walk the street does nothing but encourage violence from these gangs cos these kids KNOW that in the cold light of day, a PCSO cannot do ANYTHING about it so, again, its just a chance to gain notorioty within a gang by commiting a crime in a PCSO's presence just cos they feel they can. Dont waste time hounding the parents of kids in their late teens or twenties as they are not kids anymore and accountable to no-one but themselves. Nothing is going to change in this country because the government are too scared of offending anyones civil liberties. Surely it is OUR civil right to be able to walk to work each day without having to look at the pavement for the entire journey through fear of provoking another knife attack by a vicious but "poor, mis-guided" teen

I lived in Croydon (Hathaway Road) from 1935 until 1972 and used to love it there. Nowadays it seems to be so crime-ridden as to be a hell-hole. I'm so glad to have escaped from what is fast becoming a ghetto.

Too many immigrants and non-brits are ruining Croydon and many other towns and cities in the UK. We reap what we sow. Enoch - come back, all is forgiven.

Working at Lunar House scared the hell out of me. Getting the Tram to and from Croydon from Wimbledon was horrid.
I am just glad I was able to get out of the area and work where I don't need to worry about being attacked, verbally or otherwise, just for walking down the street away from my own postcode.

A few more police officers to just have a wander around would discourage random attacks.

Outside government buildings or otherwise, when is this going to stop?

If they want to be a hero on the streets, give them a medal when/if they manage to return from their national service. Maybe 24 months of dodging bullets and picking up the remains of their friends will help sort them out.'
Something needs to be done now, because this world is only going to get worse. The thought of one day having to bring children into this world scares me, Please let something be done now. This has to stop.
How many people have to lose their lives, and how many families have to be shattered before someone does something?

Well said, Croyboy. You're right, no one in power wants to admit it. It's Islington politics, a social experiment being conducted in this town. I spoke to a checkout woman in a Croydon supermarket last week; 75% of customers, she estimates, do not speak English. The demographics are utterly changing. Go to Croydon town centre on a Saturday. The disparity of people makes for an indifferent, even hostile atmosphere. It's a direct result of liberal left policies, very dangerous.

Thanks for your approval (trasie, mitcham). I hate the fact the this country allows youths to get away with what they do but, cry about it when they do it. Jail terms wont help these people, alot of the time, it only serves to educate them in their chosen proffesion. Like i said earlier today, these idiots need the chip knocked off their shoulder and replaced with a holdall, ready for REAL combat. Alot of Europe do this and, as this government is SO MUCH for a European union, why have not followed suit. Again, its a case of too much focus being put on a persons civil liberties. I say that their civil liberties went out the window the minute they decided that "thug life" was the path for them

I used to work in Croydon and left when it was clearly turning into a melting pot of little wannabe gangsters, stupid gangs with pathetic names who think their initiation ceremonies are cool, they're not, they're just sick and where you can't even look ahead, for fear of someone taking offence at you accidentally looking at them 'the wrong way' and getting beaten for it, or people demanding your jacket, trainers, bag, phone, money etc because they think they have a right to something that you have worked hard for - get off your lazy a*ses and get a job like the rest of us, use your time constructively, not destructively - for goodness sake !

You cannot blame lunar house soley for this and the other gang violece in croydon today, Immigration is a problem in this country as a whole, not just croydon.. I agree that Lunar house had contibuted to the decline of croydon, but i cannot see how it is linked with this stabbing.

I have to add that i agree that it seems this attack is not gang related, and to be honest the victim in this attack could have been of any origin. however i think it is blatently obvious that groups of black youths are runing lives for people all over south london. Granted that in areas such as kidbrooke and eltham it the same could be said for white youths- but we have to wake up to the fact that gangs of black youths plague this area. every issue of violence or robbery to myself, family or friends has all been perpertrated by black youths- its just a fact that in this specific area of the UK the majority of street, gun and knife crime is perpertrated by this group. something needs to be done to curb t becasue i can honestly say that people are terrorfied.

The only thing i can think of is that the circus is in town, Mitcham to be precise, and this attracts all sorts from all sorts and then these things happen. I know stabbing still goes on when the circus isn't in town but these kids live in a bloody circus at home. Probably living with their red nosed clown mum cos she drinks too much and an elephant AKA sister who's a biggun getting pregnant before she's even started her periods because miracle births do happen. INNIT.

Anyway, i got home last night and slapped my daughter silly because i thought it would make her see sense. She stole my bread knife. Have no idea where she's hidden it. Im going to write a letter to her teacher telling her to give her a big slap cos if she don't return it, there's going to be hell to pay, INNIT.

I knew Daniel from Primary school and apparently he is out of hospital and returned home. This is obviously great news but the issue of gun and knife crime must be sorted out immediately by the government. Only someone who is not completely mentally stable would set out to do something like this, theres no doubt about that.

bring back the rope and national service.
no one will be too keen use knives and guns if your gonna end up swinging in the gallows, DNA evidence is enough to make sure you have the right person responsible. national service will knock sense into these bad attitude A-holes and it should apply to everyone regardless of race or background. but it won't happen unfortunatly the PC brigade wouldn't have any of it.

I must admit I've never been accused of "trying to be diplomatic" before!
But no, "You can take the man out of the bog, but not the bog out of the man" is the original (Irish) proverb, but the principle obviously applies to the case in question - as in the nature of proverbs.

Good point, Jay. The answer? Nothing whatsoever! ...Apart from the fact that 90%+ of all the stabbings in London seem to be committed by people who are clearly not of native British descent. Thus, we have to conclude they must have got here at some stage via immigration (or by the asylum/refugee/stude
nt trail).
As for
If Daniel and the attacker were white would you still mention immigration?

The point is they weren't, and neither were any of the other who have died by stabbing in London this year.

come on people, what on earth are some you talking about "its because of Lunar House" or "this kid was not in a gang". Stop looking in the wrong place for blame. How many of you turned the other cheek or crossed the road on Tuesday when this happened, huh? This kid WAS in a gang, IS in a gang and probably STILL will be in a gang should he recover. Lets not pretend for a second that this kind of assault shocks the gang community to its core, for gods sake. Take your heads out of the sand and realise that these kids CHOOSE to be in a gand, CHOOSE to carry a knife and CHOOSE to use it. Dont get me wrong, there are people affected by this that dont deserve to be put through it but, in thje cold light of day, how many other parents have had to go through the SAME ordeal because of violence dished out by THIS boys gang? Have we forgot about the bigger picture? it sure looks like it to me. And yeah, thats a good idea, lets knock down Lunar house because another 1000 un-employed people on the streeet of Croydon is just what you need isn't it? Do you HONESTLY think that knocking down Lunar house will make ANY difference whatsoever, no, neither do i.

come on people, can you all get a grip and stop burying your head in the sand. Lets not pretend anymore, this kid WAS in a gang, IS in a gand and if he recovers fully will no doubt CONTINUE to be in a gang. These kids make their OWN choices. They CHOSE to be in a gang, they will CHOOSE whether to carry a knive and THEY will choose whether or not to use it......NO-ONE else will do that for them. Dont get me wrong, i know that there are people that will be affected by this but, how many other parents, friends or familys will have the SAME story to tell because of violence dished out by THIS boys gang in the past.....have we forgot about that? And, yeah, thats a good idea isn't it, lets knock down Lunar house cor any other Home Office buildings cos another 1000 unemployed people on the streets of Croydon is just what we need, eh? And, afer all, if we knock Lunar house down, all the black on black crime, Knife crime and strreet assaults will stop over night wont they.........?exactl

Up until very recently, I commuted to East Croydon, and had a 10 minute walk to my office nearby Lunar House. All I can say is, I am so pleased I no longer have to work in Croydon. Many times I have felt uncomfortable and threatened. Just a few months back, my colleagues and I witnessed a gang fight outside our office at 16:30, and when car loads of Police turned up, it continued, even the police were under attack. I feel sorry for those that have to live and work in and around that area - its becoming a no go area, and I am grateful I don't have to go back there.

This is just the end of the days coming closer and closer. Judgement day is coming people and i hope your ready. Just like noahs ark there is going to be a big disaster that will wipe out all the scum bags in the world. So dont worry let these people keep carrying guns and knives and kill each other because its coming their way anyway. I realy hope you are all ready for this because the signs are becoming clearer and clearer each day. The world hates each other, everyone is always stressed and rude. People dont know how to be civil and manors are being wiped out. So stop worrying about whats going on with the people you dont know and start to focus on the people close to you. Please people get prepared because when it comes you will be sorry that your not. Maybe you dont believe but all this crime and death is just a example of the hatred people have running through their veins and they WILL be punished. Maybe the police dont do enough and dont punish them to the extent they should be but im telling you now they will be punished VERY SOON!!If you dont believe me check this out www.the-end.com. Residents in Croydon, if you know of anyone comitting any type of crime you can report them. You can report on line either to the Metropolitan Police website Safe neighbourhoods section or Crimestoppers web site. Also call Crimestoppers any time of the day or night. If you know of drug dealers, gang members, people carrying knives, sholifters, car thieves etc, etc. Then report them anaonymously. The good residents of Cryoydon are much stronger than the minority of criminals, so do something about it! Report them anonymously!

The old race card becomes so boring after a while.

As usual most of the comments blame the Police as that seems to be the easy option. Let's not blame their upbringing hey!

It's gang related and nothing to do with burgers, as someone said previously they don't sell burgers at 0930.

For the people having a pop at Police, why don't you have a go!!

IF ...this was a, so called, gang-on-gang attack, then I have zero sympathy for the victim. You reap what you sew. The police do not have the manpower on the streets to deal with this scum. On the odd occasion that one is caught, the law is on their side. Stabbing somebody (even if they are a gang-related, drug dealing scumbag) should be classed as attempted murder and carry a mandatory 10 year sentence. We should also bring back the death penalty and stop pandering to low-lifes.

RJ, croydon says...

I agree with trace
DECENT PEOPLE DON'T BELONG TO GANGS
no matter how you look at something, whether he was or wasn't in a gang, black or white these are peoples lifes that are being taken away for WHAT. I try have sympathy for people in gangs as they have S*** PARENTS that rather go out raving, or go out without there children and NOT knowing where they are or what their doing. These parents who cry and complain when there child is older and wants to lick dem down in der own house deserve it, they should have been a parent when they were needed. Some youths of today have no respect, morals, they weren't born by themselves, WHERE ARE THE PARENTS.
Youths don't understand that knowledge brings power not a gun or knife and knowledge also brings money.

They make it harder for all the other youths of today as they are classed as the same - so all this means they have to work ten times harder. YOUR ONLY AS GOOD AS THE COMPANY YOU KEEP so if your not in a gang but hang around with some one who is. your in a gang, simple as. And any way i don't like labeling youths in gangs i rather call it a click as that is what it is essentially. If you label someone something how do you expect them to act. Im 19, black, yes i sometimes do talk slang, i do were creps, lol, but i also went to college and is workin in a full time job earning £25,000 a year and is goin Uni in September (yes my english is bad in this coz im not watchin my Ps nd Qs but yet people would be quick to judge. The media does not show hard working youths as that would be BORING.

I wonder how may paents reading or writing is know where there children is? or let dem walk street late at night. sum parents need to fix up for REAL, wot could your child possible be doin at 11pm at night. I see people dat walk street (around my age 16 - 19) as sad people, that need to find some ting to do- and if you can't find nuttin to do stay in your YARD, lool. And its allways the same street walkers/car cruisers that come to raves and make trouble KMT. The devil makes work for idle hands - they need something to do. If your not working go college or even doin both will keep you busy. but with the gun & knife crime there is nothing you or I can do about it apart from try and make sure your children are safe by knowing where they are and WHO they are with at all times. And if that doesn't work fling sum lick pon dem backside lol. Bring up ur children to have goals and ambition and that life is not all about money & clothes & cars (this goes out especially for (16-21 ppl, you kno who you are) then that lifestyle would not even appeal to them. EVERYBODY IS CAPALE AND HAS A CHOICE BUT IT ALSO DEPENDS ON WOT SORT OF FAMILY THEY HAVE, because i kno for a fact when i was 12-16 and my uncle or aunty even my parents frend would say why you out too late or what are you up too, (DECENT ADULTS)

To youths that are in violent gangs.
You will not be young for ever. Very soon you will be an adult. You will most likely have children of your own that you will love dearly. When your children are teenagers bet your life you won't want them endangering their life by being in a gang!!

the only way knife crime is ever going to stop is to take the drugs off the street these yung men AND GIRLS are brawling over their 'ends' there selling drugs to make money coz the goverment aint helping the youths of today. so the answer to this teenage stabbing would be to get the drugs off the street and that impossible. instead of people making xomemnts when they dont know the truth is stupid. its not to do with parents or the school as many youngsters are in gangs and there parents have no idea. get well soon daniel. bold]bold
