A lorry driver came up with a Wallace and Gromit type of excuse when police found crack cocaine and heroin hidden inside his pocket.

Jonathan Williams, 33, of Convent Road, Ashford, told officers the drugs stash was there because he had put someone else's trousers on by mistake, a court heard.

Williams was given a 12-month prison sentence suspended for a year and ordered to do 150 hours unpaid work for the community at Guildford Crown Court on Friday.

Williams had denied two charges of possessing a Class A drug however during an earlier trial jurors had found him guilty.

They had heard he was searched in hospital when he was taken there after being attacked at a friend's flat in Peregrine Road, Sunbury, in the early hours of August 14 last year.

Medics removed his clothing and a cop seized 528mg of cocaine and 194mg of heroin wrapped in cling-film, along with £350 cash.

In his defence, he said he had been in bed with a lover when up to three men had kicked the door of the apartment down and attacked him, hitting him on the head.

He said he fled the premises grabbing someone else's jogging bottoms in a hurry - before police found him lying in a pool of blood in nearby Layton's Lane.

Prosecuting Carolyn Graham told the jury 10 days after the drugs find, the defendant was quizzed by Staines police but failed to mention during the interview that the trousers had not been his.

Defending Laura Barrie said Williams had been feeling dizzy after being assaulted and had grabbed the first pair of trousers he could find.

The court heard that Williams had previous drugs convictions, including possession of a Class A drug with intent to supply in 1995.
