Sutton Council's cheap insulation scheme has low take up

Thousands of insulation rolls offered to residents at a rock bottom price are sitting at the back of council offices after the green campaign failed to attract enough homeowners.

Sutton Council teamed up with B&Q to offer 5,000 insulation rolls to residents for £1 per roll as part of the One Planet Living project, a scheme to turn Hackbridge into the UK’s first sustainable suburb by encouraging residents to change to a greener lifestyle.

In the scheme, residents could buy up to 30 rolls over the phone, normally costing £24 each, from the council and pick them up from the Environmental Offices on Denmark Road, Carshalton.

However, it seems the campaign failed to impress local residents, with very few taking up the offer.

A resident who did not want to be identified said: “These were originally purchased in April and are still stored in the car park behind 24 Denmark Road.

“It was paid for by Sutton Council, to be sold to residents, but still had few takers.”

Councillor Colin Hall, executive member for environment on Sutton Council, said: “Loft insulation is one of the cheapest and easiest ways for homeowners to cut carbon emissions from the home and save on energy bills.

“As part of our efforts to promote One Planet Living we have bought around 5,000 rolls of insulation for £1 each and are offering them at cost price to Sutton households.

“We have so far sold over 1,000 rolls and are continuing to promote the offer to residents and staff who live in the borough.

“The loft insulation does not deteriorate and we will continue to promote the offer throughout the summer at events including the Hackbridge Carnival and Carshalton Environment Fair.”

One Planet Living is an initiative from charity BioRegional, based at BedZed in Hackbridge. Their studies show that if everyone in the world consumed as many natural resources as Sutton residents we would need three planets to support us.
