Sutton libraries are launching a cultural challenge to keep children busy over the school holiday.

About 3,000 children are expected to take up the Summer Reading Challenge 2009, organised by Sutton Council’s Libraries Service, and enjoy six weeks of reading, book-related activities and prizes.

Councillor Graham Tope, executive member for libraries on Sutton Council said: “We want children in Sutton to read more and take advantage of the enormous range of free books and other services we offer in our libraries.

“Summer is a great time to spread the word, when our younger residents have plenty of spare time on their hands.

“This summer’s fantasy challenge is sure to excite and entertain and we hope for many it will be the start of a long love affair with the written word.”

Each year children are encouraged to read six or more books of their choice during the holidays. During the challenge they can collect stickers and rewards, plus a certificate and medal if they complete the challenge.

An interactive website will link children with top authors and illustrators, and give them space to talk about their favourite books and take part in online games and activities.

There are also large print materials available for visually impaired children, thanks to the support of the Royal National Institute for the Blind National Library Service.

The council has teamed up with independent charity the Reading Agency for the project. During the launch week, authors Matthew Morgan, David Sinden and Guy Macdonald, known as the Beastly Boys, and Mark Robson, will be visiting Sutton Central Library and local schools to promote the challenge.

Children aged four to 12 can sign up for free from Wednesday. For more information call 020 8770 4700 or visit quest seekers.org.uk.
