Its classic board games were the perfect accompaniment to childhood but now the Gibsons family firm has grown up to be 90 years old.
The business, in Throwley Way, Sutton, brought generations of families together with hits such as Escape from Colditz and Pass the Bomb.
It is now celebrating a gentler time before PlayStations and iPods by relaunching some of the stalwarts from its dusty back catalogue.
Kate Armitage, great-grandaughter of founder Harry, said: “The 90th anniversary celebrations provide Gibsons with an opportunity to communicate its heritage.
“Over the years Gibsons has changed a great deal. Originally a manufacturer of cards, it developed a reputation for quality games.
“A lot of the range is about nostalgia and there a few games in our back catalogue that we are now looking at developing.
"I am so proud to be part of a business which has such long associations with my family.”
Harry Gibson founded the firm in August 1919 with an unsecured £500 bank loan and began selling card games and postcards to stationers.
As HP Gibson & Sons it made its name after World War II with the big-selling strategy board games L’Attaque and Dover Patrol.
Over the past 20 years the company has added 150 jigsaw titles to its range, mostly featuring traditional scenes from British artists.
It is now the oldest British-owned firm in the industry and recently won a Gold Good Toy Award for its My World children’s puzzle series.
