An entrepreneur who provided happier meals at a struggling McDonald’s is a finalist in the Franchisee of the Year awards.
Mike Smith, from Sutton, has worked overnight shifts alongside staff since turning around a Mitcham branch in 2000.
He now runs three McDonald’s in south London, tapping into the lucrative late-night market and encouraging education opportunities.
An awards spokesman said: “In just nine months, Mike has completed a full renovation of his third restaurant and built a training centre and head office for his growing business.
“Mike also provides facilities for staff to gain English and maths qualifications and work through apprenticeship programmes.”
The award winner, to be announced on October 1, will receive a £5,000 prize from HSBC.
