It hoped to use the universal language of the beautiful game to promote better relations among the Sutton community.
But a two-week summer football scheme only united participants in bewilderment when it was shelved without warning.
Now, after complaints from parents, Sutton Racial Equality Council (SREC) has finally given an explanation for the cancellation.
Executives said the resignation of a director and a lack of funds and CRB reports scuppered the free course after just one week.
An SREC spokesman said: “The aim of the scheme has always been to foster good community cohesion among all races within the community which we purport to serve.
“The executives - all volunteers - are trying their best to keep the organisation functioning properly during this transitional period, and felt that our energies would be better used in trying to get SREC back on its feet.
“I must, however, stress that this unfortunate situation was only a temporary measure in the face of the situation that the organisation finds itself. The executives would also like to use this opportunity to apologise to all concerned.”
Jane Rochford, a parent, said: “The scheme helps the children get along better but some of the mums were upset because they had arranged childcare and didn’t know who to complain to.”
SREC is still confident of running a better-organised football programme when its new director is appointed, provided vetted coaches can be found.
