More than 6,000 people filled Sutton High Street to see children’s favourites Pingu and Shaun the Sheep switch on the Christmas lights.

The St Nicholas Centre was transformed into a winter wonderland, complete with a polar bear, craft workshops, face-painting and Father Christmas on hand to entertain the kids.

The family-friendly fun kicked off at 4pm and the new environmentally friendly lights were turned on at 7pm.

Shops were open late, with live entertainment in the High Street and St Nicholas Centre and free parking at the Gibson Road car park.

A series of stages down the High Street were sponsored by local businesses, including Asda, the St Nicholas Centre, Times Square and the Sutton Music Centre, while the lights were funded by Sutton Council.

Councillor Lyn Gleeson, executive member for Economic Renewal, said: “Whether it’s the crafts market throughout December or a special visit to Santa’s Grotto at the St Nicholas Centre, there’s something for everyone on Sutton High Street.”
