Green-fingered residents call for help on Carshalton allotment development

An allotment association run at the same Carshalton site for around 100-years is appealing for help from residents and businesses to get a much-needed trading hut.

Green Wrythe Lane allotment association was granted planning permission for a hut measuring 20ft by 8ft – but the group cannot afford to pay for it.

Treasurer Steve Ring said the hut would help the group's many elderly members, who do not drive, to get compost and other heavy items at reasonable prices.

He said: “We are looking to obtain - free of charge - some sort of trading hut.

"We have spoken to the council and they have given permission for us place one near the front of the allotments. We do not mind if it is a shed type building or any form of portable structure.”

Mr Ring said the allotment is very popular and attracts all kinds of people.

He said: “In the 70s and 80s the allotment site became quite overgrown as people seemed not to want allotments.

"In recent times things have changed and now we have no vacant plots.

“People on the allotment are of all ages, young and elderly and we all work together to help each other with various problems.”
