Actor Bill Nighy won his second Bafta of the year on Sunday night for his performance in the television drama State of Play.

The former Warlingham resident beat co-star David Morrissey, Jim Broadbent and Christopher Eccleston for the award, which comes after he clinched the best supporting actor gong for his role as an ageing rock star in Love Actually in February's Bafta film awards.

In State of Play Nighy played Cameron Foster, a hard-edged newspaper editor.

As a schoolboy in Purley he dreamt of a career in journalism as a tribute to his hero Ernest Hemingway.

After leaving John Fisher Grammar School, Nighy worked on Field magazine and was due to start training as a sub-editor when, in true Hemingway style, he ran off to Paris to write a novel.

He returned to England without writing a word and enrolled at drama school in Guildford before making his debut on the big screen.

He is currently starring in the BBC1 costume drama He Knew He Was Right.
