A popular music festival is backing Operation Butterfly.

The Nonsuch Rotary Club is to donate a share of the money raised through their Big Band Festival in June to help build a cancer information centre in Sutton.

The Butterfly Room will provide information and support for cancer patients and their carers at St Helier Hospital.

Rotarian David Hagger said: “We are willing to allocate part of Nonsuch Rotary’s share of any surplus made from this year’s concert to the Sutton Guardian’s Operation Butterfly.

“We understand the target is £10,000 to develop a room at St Helier Hospital to enable the Macmillan Butterfly organisation to provide similar services for the residents of Sutton to those currently given at Epsom.”

Nonsuch Rotary’s share of the Big Band proceeds each year are used for various charities and, in the past two years, some of the money has been allocated to the Butterfly Centre in Epsom.

Jay Craig and his orchestra will be the main act for the 2010 event, which will happen in the Nonsuch Mansion gardens. Tickets will cost £17 on the gate but only £14 if bought in advance.

So far, the Operation Butterfly campaign has received over £5,000 in donations.

With your help, the Sutton Guardian’s campaign is looking to find the rest of the funds needed to reach £10,000 and make this project a reality.

A health trust manager who lost her father to cancer has highlighted the importance of the service the Butterfly Room will provide.

Julia Sinclair, who has worked at Epsom and St Helier Hospitals Trust for almost seven years, lost her father to cancer 20 years ago.

She said: “When he had cancer diagnosed, we just didn’t know what to expect. Cancer wasn’t talked about as much then and there were no services like the Butterfly Centre, where you could go for advice or information.

It was a frightening time and I think as a family we felt quite alone.

“Nowadays, things have changed and services like the Macmillan Butterfly Centre in Epsom Hospital can offer people who are touched by cancer some of the support they need.”

For more information about the Butterfly Centre you can call the centre on 01372 735456, or visit their website at epsom-sthelier/cancerservices.
