About 200 Sutton school teachers have been unable to return to school as a result of the air travel chaos.

There are also about 400 students stranded overseas due to the ban on flights across Europe after an Icelandic volcano erupted.

In many cases, supply teachers have been brought in to help fill the absences and the council has confirmed that all schools currently remain fully open, with only two exceptions.

The figures have continued to rise during the day as the council received updates from schools.

Stanley Park High School will be closed for year 8 and 9 pupils today and tomorrow (April 20).

Carshalton Boys Sports College has asked year 7 and 8 pupils to work from home on Tuesday and Wednesday. Year 9 pupils have been asked to work from home on Thursday and Friday.

Ian Birnbaum, Strategic Director of Children, Young People and Learning Services at Sutton Council, said: “I can reassure parents worried about school closures following the Icelandic volcano eruption that all schools in the borough remain open.

“Although a number of teachers in the borough have been unable to return to work after the Easter holidays due to the flight cancellations, the schools are coping well under these difficult circumstances and have brought in supply teachers to cover lessons so that there is as little disruption as possible to pupils’ education.

“However, as a small number of schools have a large number of teachers absent they may need to make some re-arrangements for particular year groups and parents are advised to check www.suttonlea.org/opencheck for up to date information.”
