Sutton’s own Elvis Presley impersonator took to the stage in front of hundreds of his adoring fans on Friday night to raise money for the Royal Marsden.

Ben Thompson, of Middleton Road, Carshalton, raised more than £400 after wowing an audience of friends and school pals with a virtuoso performance at the Beacon School, in Banstead.

The 16-year-old, known as Sideburns to his mates, belted out a whopping 26 songs including classics such as Suspicious Minds, Hound Dog, Jailhouse Rock and Burning Love.

In true Elvis style Ben even made a quick outfit change, swapping his black leather jacket for a more exotic blue jump suit midway through the performance - much to the delight of his army of female admirers.

Ben, who only started impersonating The King last year, was delighted with the gig especially as the audience started getting involved.

He said: “The main objective was to get people dancing and within a couple of sings they were up on their feet bopping away.

“There were a few screams by some girls during the concert and I was really happy with the turn out.

Since appearing on page three of the Sutton Guardian two weeks ago, Ben has become something of celebrity at school.

Although his mates have kept his feet firmly on the ground by comparing him to the more traditional page three regulars in the tabloid press.

He said: “Last week a couple of girls I know at school brought in some copies of the paper which was quite funny but my mates have been teasing me.

“They reckon I’m the worst page three they have ever seen in a newspaper.”

Ben intends to make a few more stage appearances, to gain experience, before heading off to Birmingham’s Hilton Metropole in January for the International Elvis Championships.

Ben said: “The whole family is booked into the Hilton and my mum is ridiculously excited.”
