Sutton and Merton teens urged to get cervical cancer vaccination

Teenagers have been urged to take advantage of vital protection against cervical cancer.

A new immunisation programme, run by NHS Sutton and Merton community services, will target teenage girls who have not yet had the human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccination.

Dr Boaventura Rodrigues, consultant in public health, said: “The benefits of introducing this vaccine will be felt by women and their families for generations to come.”

Girls aged 12 to 18 and born after September 1, 1990, should book an appointment at new weekly clinics in Wimbledon and Mitcham. Health bosses urged teenagers to act fast, as from August 31 the vaccination will not be available to women 18 or older.

The sessions will run from 3pm to 5pm at the Wide Way surgery in Wide Way, Mitcham, on Wednesdays and the Patrick Doody clinic in Pelham Road, Wimbledon, on Thursdays.

For more information call the service’s children’s immunisation team on 020 8254 8283 or email smpct.immunisationteam@nhs.net.

Why is the vaccine not availble to women over 18 after August 31st? I must say, my daughter who is 14 will not be getting the vaccine as it isn't known future side affects and possible problems with it and as my daughter isn't sexually active I don't see the point. A lot of girls around Sutton are of that class and do need it, but as for a lot of girls who don't have sex when they are kids I don't see the point. Glad it is available, but just not for my daughter. I wouldn't want to find out 10 years down the line that it has a bad health issue attached to it. I'm not living in the dark ages, just in my family girls don't have sex as teenagers and don't need such a vaccine. But I do wonder why girls over 18 won't be given the chance to have it after August. I also think anyone and everyone of every age should be given breast exams, not just those who are over 50. My aunt died of breast cancer at age 22. It happens to just as many young vibrant women as well as old women. Womens healthcare in general needs to focus more on younger womens health and not just the middle aged/elderly. Too many young women die of womens diseases that can be prevented and/or treated. In that respect, this vaccine is wonderful if it saves lives. Hopefully girls are also being told to not have sex when they are kids to also insure their health and lives on all levels. One day, hopefully, they will find a cancer vaccine for all cancers and save millions.

Most, though not all, girls are sexually active by the age of 18 these days meaning the vaccination would be pointless. Not sure what you mean about 'girls in Sutton of that class' but people in glass houses and all that. Teenagers all do far more than their parents know about. Also breast screening is not effective enough on younger women as the tissue in the breast changes with age. If you have a family history of breast cancer you can see a specialist.

Classy girls don't have sex before marriage, that's what I meant. End of. I happily saved myself for marriage (at age 25) and my daughter strongly believes the same. I have no religion, just wasn't interested in throwing my life away by risking having a baby out of marriage and all the hardships that brings, along with the benefits society has to pay towards such irresponsible behavior. Being a single mum is avoidable. I know where my daughter is, and she isn't out drinking/smoking with the chavs getting pregnant and causing community crime. She wants to be a cancer doctor and fight the disease that has affected her family and so many others. She can't do that if she's out in a mini skirt getting off with cheesy go nowhere boys on the dole. I don't care how my morals offend, it's about time people with morals and class speak up. So sad that a large portion of this broken society thinks lack of morals and self respect is ok and that old fashioned and moral lives are unrealistic. I pity those who think so little of society to say "most" girls are trashy. Says so much about the state of Britian. My daughter (and many of her friends) works hard on her education and wouldn't allow some man/boy to destroy her chances for success. She respects herself enough to expect to find a man one day to also respect her like her father respects me. We have shown her by example how to be a proper lady. One day she wants a husband and to raise a good family, not a broken life of hardships which teenage sex brings. It's not such a hard idea to get ones head around.

This is an article about a future life saving injection, nothing to do with contraception or under-age sex...
