Loud cheers broke out as incumbent MP Tom Brake retained his seat in Carshalton and Wallington.

The Liberal Democrat has won in the last three elections and retained his seat with a very comfortable 22,180 votes over his closest rival Conservative Ken Andrew who polled 16,920. Mr Andrew has been fighting in vain for the seat for the past 10 years.

Labour's Shafi Khan took 4,015 votes; Frank Day, UKIP, got 1,348 votes, BNP's Charlotte Lewis had 1,100 votes and Green's George Dow got 355.

Mr Brake's team cheered loudly when they realised he had comfortably won the day.

Ken Andrew talking to the Sutton Guardian:

The result was announced at just after 4am and Mr Brake gave his acceptance speech as exhausted counters filed out of the hall at Westcroft Leisure centre in Sutton.

In a very brief speech, he gave his heartfelt thanks to his family, campaign team and supporters.

He said: "No political party is going to form a government by itself."

He went on to say he would continue push the Liberal Democrat agenda.

He said: "I would like to thank my team and my family for their involvement in this campaign."
