A man charged with a knife murder at a Sutton home for vulnerable people has been found hanged in his prison cell.
Adrian Johnson, 27, was discovered dead in his cell at Belmarsh Prison yesterday (Thursday).
He had been charged with stabbing to death 49-year-old Robert Lewis at a house in Cheam Road, Sutton, used to accommodate ex-prisoners, single mums and people with a history of mental health problems.
He also attacked another man Colin Buckfield and had been charged with his assault.
A Prison Service spokesperson said: "HMP Belmarsh prisoner Adrian Johnson was found hanging in his cell at 2.00pm on Thursday 13 May 2010. Resuscitation was attempted but Mr Johnson was pronounced dead at 2.36pm.
"As with all deaths in custody, the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman will conduct an investigation."
A Met Police spokesman said: "We were called yesterday afternoon to Belmarsh prison after a man was found dead in his cell.
"The incident is being investigated by Greenwich Police."
