A passionate footballer who was left with a 15-year memory loss and brain damage after a brutal holiday attack represented his country in the 2010 cerebral palsy European Championships.
Jeff Davis from the Football Association said Robbie Hughes, of Wallington, played well in midfield for England against Ireland, Australia and Ukraine in the international competition held in Glasgow.
He said the former Sutton United and Croydon Athletic player, who needed life-saving operations after his head was stamped on in Crete in 2008, had helped England qualify for the World Championships.
Mr Davis said: “We are expected to finish in fifth place. Robbie had a rocky moment at the beginning, but he seems fine now. He has played very well.”
