A group of friends from south Croydon raised an amazing £60,000 in just two months for victims of the devastating floods in Pakistan.

In August Ruhma Qureshi, 26, and Faisal Sharif, 26, decided to try and make a difference by climbing Mount Snowdon to raise money for the Red Cross.

Miss Qureshi said: “The level of donations has exceeded our expectations. The whole thing started with a justgiving page and we promoted it on facebook.

“The next thing we knew, friends of ours had asked for support from their companies and CEOs were pledging to match what we had raised.”

The friends have raised almost £20,000 which is set to be matched by two companys in the city bringing their total to £60,000.

Miss Qureshi said: “When the disaster happened I did not hear that much about emergency appeals in the media or on the streets.

“A bunch of us wanted to make a difference and see the money we raised going straight to the people rather than through corrupt politicians, so we decided to donate it to the Red Cross.

“About 20 of us climbed Mount Snowdon, it was tough going and took us about four hours to get to the summit and longer going down.

“We are thrilled we have raised all this money. Our justgiving page is still open so anyone who wants to donate can go to www.justgiving.com/FloodEmergencyAppeal.”
