Three teenagers have been charged with an assault outside Oceana nightclub, which left a man with life threatening head injuries.

The teenagers were accused of punching and kicking Anthony Laywood, 46, and continuing to kick him while he was lying on the floor in the early hours of Saturday morning.

David McDonald, 18, of Longford Court, Epsom, Jordan Harris, 18, of Moor Lane, Chessington, and a third 17-year-old boy, from Wimbledon, who cannot be named for legal reasons, all face joint charges of unlawfully and maliciously causing grievous bodily harm shortly before 2am.

Their families and friends packed out the public gallery at the hearing at Kingston Magistrates’ Court on Monday.

The 17-year-old was accused of kicking Mr Laywood’s head while he lay unconscious.

The court heard Mr Laywood, who lives in Kingston, was in hospital in a stable condition but was unable to speak.

His condition could deteriorate, magistrates were told.

None of the teenagers were asked to enter a plea.

Magistrates denied bail for Mr McDonald, an apprentice mechanic working in Byfleet, despite requests for him to attend his paternal grandfather’s funeral later that afternoon.

The 17-year-old, who is a college student, was also denied bail.

But Mr Harris, a trainee carpenter who works part-time in Waitrose, was due to return home to Chessington on bail after another night on remand, after his parents agreed to pay a £5,000 bond the next day.

He will also be subject to a curfew order between 8.30pm and 7am.

The court declined jurisdiction and the three will reappear at Kingston Crown Court on October 28 for a preliminary hearing.

Oceana opened in 2003 on the site of the former Options club and is one of the largest nightclubs in south-west London, attracting up to 2,500 people on popular nights across its 11 rooms.
