A suspected carjacker was arrested after a high speed chase through Streatham this morning.

A BMW was targeted overnight in an attack with striking similarities to an incident involving the mother of race murder victim Stephen Lawrence.

Adem Kemal was driving his BMW M Sport when he was rammed after stopping at lights just after midnight.

The car was stolen in Croydon, and police cars and a helicopter chased the stolen car to Streatham, where they caught a man after it crashed.

The incident mirrored events that happened to Doreen Lawrence last week.

Both victims were driving BMWs and were attacked by three men in a Mercedes - in incidents just three miles apart.

Mr Kemal was travelling in Hilier Lane, Beddington, when the incident happened.

He said: "I stopped at the lights and a Mercedes hit me. When I got out to look at the damage two guys jumped from the Mercedes before the driver reversed.

"I tried grappling with the guys that got in my car and put my hand in the window to stop them, but they drove away, dragging me for about 10 yards."

Mr Kemal, 26, said the car narrowly missed running over his ankle as it sped off.

Police confirmed they chased the stolen car to Kempshott Road, where it crashed into a bollard.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: "The car crashed into a bollard and we detained a man at the scene."

She said the man remained in custody.

Mrs Lawrence was in Sandfield Road, Thornton Heath at 7.30pm on October 12 when her BMW was struck from behind by a Mercedes carrying three men.

As she got out and inspected the damage two men pushed her and jumped into her car - containing her credit cards, handbag and keys - before speeding off.

The third man drove off in the Mercedes.

Her son, Stephen Lawrence, was 18 when he was stabbed to death at a bus stop in Eltham in 1993.

Police said it was too early to link the incidents.
