History buffs gathered to celebrate the completion of conservation work on a Putney obelisk.

The monument, on Putney Heath, was erected in 1776 to commemorate the fire prevention work done by scientist and Member of Parliament David Hartley.

The monument had come to the attention of American-based group Daughters of the American Revolution two years ago when they celebrated the 225th Anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Paris, the document which had formally ended the American Revolution.

Hartley, who had championed the American cause, had signed the document on behalf of the British Government.

Using money raised in their London-based chapter, the Walter Hines Page Chapter, the DAR members had funded cleaning and repair work on the monument.

Among those who gathered were MP Justine Greening, the Mayor of Wandsworth Piers Conolly McCausland.
