The last time I went into The Railway Telegraph was over three years ago and to say much has changed would be an understatement.

Operating under new management, the pub has been refurbished and now resembles a trendy bar on the Strand as opposed to your normal bog-standard Young's.

There is a private booth at the back of the pub which can be hired out for special events complete with a DJ booth.

On Tuesday nights there is a free movie night (this week is Rocky II) and on Wednesday a poker night.

They also run a special price deal on Carlsberg between Tuesdays and Thursdays and live sport is shown on brand new HD televisions.

There wasn't much of an atmosphere but I have a feeling that it gets quite busy at the weekends (if that's what you're looking for) what with the private booth and VIP areas.

The beer garden at the back has been refurbished too and it is impressive with seating areas that are covered and, despite being situated next to a busy road, it remains fairly well concealed.

Strangely, there is an outside lavatory.

Prices are reasonable as well - I only paid three pounds for my pint of Heineken which, considering it is a Young's, was, I thought, a bit of a bargain.

So, a huge improvement on my last visit to the Railway Telegraph (it used to be a real dreary old man's pub) and I would recommend anyone looking for a drink or two in Thornton Heath to make this their first port of call.

Décor: 5/5 – Comfortable and smart surroundings.

Drink: 3/5 – All the standard draught lagers and some ales too.

Price: 3/5 – Not as cheap as a Wetherspoons but still decent prices.

Atmosphere: 4/5 – I'm only judging on a quiet Thursday night but I thought there was a friendly and lively vibe.

Staff: 3/5 – Polite, quick service.
