Firefighters were called to the Seething Wells university campus last night after a student started a chip pan fire.
Engines from Surbiton and Kingston were called out at 8.50pm to the halls of residence after the student evacuated the three-storey flat in Portsmouth Road and used his mobile phone to dial 999.
He also used a fire blanket and CO2 extinguisher to try and put the chip pan fire out.
Watch manager Jim Laming said: "He left a chip pan unattended while heating the oil up."
The second floor flat suffered smoke and fire damage.
