Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg officially opened the Sutton Life Centre this morning.

Mr Clegg embarked on a whistle-stop tour of the controversial £8 million facility, in Sutton Common Road, before making a speech to invited guests.

As part of his visit he also sat in on a short lesson with Greenshaw High School pupils on what they had learned from the venue.

He described Sutton as a "vanguard of the Big Society" and said the Life Centre "fitted in pefectly with that spirit".

"I was struck by what a boy called Jack said about the place. He said 'it makes you feel confident about life', which is exactly right. It will give optimism and confidence to young people.

"Growing up today isn’t easy as life has become more complex for young people to navigate.

"We want to wipe the slate clean so young people are free from the burden of our failings.

"There is nothing fair about putting those burdens on your shoulders. What happens to you when you’re young is the most important time of your life.

"Every single child, irrespective of their circumstances, should get the start in life they deserve and in a nutshell that is the definition of what a fair, liberal society should be like."

An invited (therefore non-critical) audience? No public allowed? How convenient.

No doubt there’s plenty of free nibbles and drinkies on offer, at taxpayers’ expense.

Someone should tell Corporal Clegg there’s an elephant in the room – a great big useless white elephant.

Every child gets a fair start in life? How? By eliminating their parents jobs in mass? By wasting their parents taxmoney left right and centre? By making University fees so high that the average family will find it nearly impossible to send their kids to school? Cleggron needs a reality check and get their Eton heads out of the sand. Please don't patronize us!

To comment on David7's question above, this was almost certainly a carefully spun, stage-managed event in front of an invited audience. Residents near the Life Centre were sent letters by the leader of Sutton council headed "Sutton Life Centre Official Opening 10am Onwards" giving the impression it was going to be opened at 10. I got there just before 10 and it was already open with no sign of Nick. Clearly he was there earlier and the Lib Dems did not trust the general public to witness the event. Which is not very polite seeing how much the general public have paid for the Life Centre.

Looking at the number of fatties in the High Street I find it difficult to disagree that Sutton is in the vanguard of the big society.

Why are the Lib Dems scared of people protesting against their wanton waste of our cash- bit of a surprise that.High Street still not finished - 3 months overdue (July 2010 was the date given)Its bad enough having a Council run by them but Cameron must have been off his head to allow them into Government!!!!
