Library users can now borrow ebooks from the comfort of their armchairs.

Sutton libraries have launched a new service to allow users to borrow the electronic books through their ereaders, PCs and smartphones.

Their digital library currently contains almost 500 volumes, split between eBooks and audiobooks.

The innovative scheme will allow users to download books remotely, without having to make a trip into library buildings.

After downloading free software from the Sutton library website, borrowers connect to the library’s eBook database at home using their usual library card and PIN.

Only the Kindle eReader is not supported for legal reasons.

Councillor Graham Tope, Sutton Council's spokesperson on libraries, said: “Sutton’s libraries have a reputation for introducing pioneering new initiatives, and the eBook service is no different."
