Students have claimed they saw a boy being chased and stabbed by a gang of youths at a college in Wandsworth yesterday.

Witnesses at South Thames College said the boy was pursued by eight youths wearing hoods moments before he was seen staggering along the pavement, telling students: “I’ve just been stabbed.”

Police yesterday confirmed they were investigating reports of a shot – or a number of shots – being fired during a fight “involving a number of people”.

However, a spokeswoman for the London Ambulance Service said two ambulance crews were sent to the college just before 1.45pm to reports of a “stabbing”.

She said two patients were immediately taken to a south London hospital - one as a priority.

One student, named only as Joe, told the Wandsworth Guardian: “There were supposedly about eight boys wearing hoods chasing him.

“There was blood on the pavement and someone told me he was staggering around the pavement saying 'I’ve just been stabbed'.”

Another student, who didn’t wish to be named, said: “All I heard is that some kid got stabbed and went to hospital but apart from that we haven’t been told anything by the college.”

A member of staff from the Brewers Inn pub, on East Hill next to the college, also said he heard a stabbing had taken place.

The police spokeswoman said “two males” suffered injuries that were not thought to be life threatening. It is not yet known how old those involved in the attack are.

A college spokesman also confirmed that a separate incident had occurred prior to the attack, but could not confirm if the two were connected.

Forensic investigators were at the scene while a police cordon was put in place, blocking off the pavement on the college side of Wandsworth High Street between St Ann’s Hill and Garratt Lane.

The cordon, which caused a temporary disruption to traffic, was lifted at 5.30pm yesterday.

No arrests have been made.

A spokesman for South Thames College said in a statement: “We can confirm that a serious incident took place at the entrance to the college’s Wandsworth campus.

“Emergency services were called immediately by a member of staff and arrived promptly. A college student was treated for minor injuries on site.

“The college is cooperating fully with the police in this matter.

“South Thames College has rigorous security systems in place to ensure the safety of its learners including a security barrier in the entrance, a ‘no ID, no entry’ policy for all staff and students and security guards positioned throughout the campus.

“We continue to review and monitor the effectiveness of our procedures in order to ensure the safety of both our learners and our staff.”

The incident is being investigated by Trident, the Met Police’s specialist gun crime unit. Anyone with information should call 020 8785 8603.
