More than 250 health and safety issues raised about Sutton High Street during its £3.2m redevelopment have emerged.

The Sutton Council records list 130 urgent and 50 priority works listed on Sutton High Street between July 2009 and September 2010 that need to be carried out to prevent potential accidents.

A number relate to work done on the High Street by developer Skanska that were flagged up during the works as needing to be repeated.

They are understood to include paving being replaced again because of potential trip hazards.

Reports of accidents during the works have also emerged, including reports of a woman whose wheelchair was damaged and her backed jarred when it went down a hole in High Street where paving was removed.

Stuart Gordon-Bullock, health and safety spokesman for Sutton Council's Conservative opposition, said: “These records reinforce our concerns about the health and safety record of the High Street works and in particular our concerns about the number of accidents.”

At least five people are suing the council over accidents relating to the redevelopment.

Annette Madden, executive head of street scene services at Sutton Council, said: “The Highways Maintenance Record is an unedited compilation of potential issues raised by our highways inspectors for every main road in the borough. Not all require repair or attention and many are duplicated.

“The number of issues contained in the High Street section of our report, which is a routine public document, is pretty normal for a development of this size. Issues that were identified as serious and are connected to the revamp have been rectified at no extra cost to the taxpayer.”

A spokesman for Skanska said it was unable to comment directly on incidents stated in the report, because it had not seen it.

She added: “We can advise, however, that safety is of paramount importance to Skanska and during the project any issues that were raised by our client would have been addressed immediately.”

She said any issues about the development raised by December 2011 would be carried out by Skanska under warranty.
