Two Sri Lankan immigrants have been found guilty of shoplifting after they admitted stealing to send clothes back to their homeland.

Tharsan Sivagnani, 24, from Mitcham and Joe Jeyaratnam, 27, from Wimbledon, were caught at Debenham’s, in Sutton High Street, on January 13.

The pair, handed a conditional discharge at Sutton Magistrates’ Court on Friday, had stuffed clothing worth up to £1,000 into their bags after becoming “overwhelmed” by the number of goods.


A diabetic has been fined and handed six points after failing to renew his licence which had been revoked by the DVLA.

Alexander Dent, from Redhill, Surrey, pleaded guilty at Sutton Magistrates’ Court on Friday to driving away from an accident in Carshalton and driving without insurance or an MOT.

Under strict DVLA rules diabetics have their licence revoked every three years in order for their eyes to be tested.


A man accused of cultivating a cannabis factory in his parents house joked with a magistrate that he found the process “very complicated”.

Ward Budd, from Regal Crescent, in Wallington, laughed when his nine plant factory was described as “sophisticated”.

The 24-year-old, appearing at Sutton Magistrates’ Court on Friday, said he began growing cannabis because it had become very expensive.

He must return for sentence later this month.
