Whyteleafe pulled off a dramatic victory at high-flying Met Police in a nine-goal thriller at Imber Court on Saturday.

An extraordinary game was on a knife edge all the way through, up to the end of nine minutes of stoppage time when Steve Sutherland blazed over when gifted the chance to earn the Blues a share of the spoils.

It means that Met Police, who have swept all before them for most of the season, have now lost to the bottom two sides after last month’s 3-0 defeat at Horsham YMCA.

Whyteleafe took the lead after five minutes when the unmarked Danny Oakins headed a long cross into the roof of the net.

At the other end, Blues striker Eddie Smith had four efforts from more than 20 yards but Leafe keeper Gavin Dilley stood firm.

The visitors took advantage with a second goal five minutes before the break when the ball wasn’t properly cleared and Ryan Thomas drove home.

The Blues were back in it two minutes after the restart when Jamie Field lobbed the ball into the net.

But, from the kick off, Chris O’Flaherty ran straight into the Met area and hit the ball over keeper Will Packham to make it 3-1.

Blues came back strongly again and Craig Watkins was unlucky with a 25-yarder that crashed against the inside of the post before bouncing back into play.

They grabbed a second goal after 64 minutes when Sutherland volleyed home a free kick.

But, once again, Whyteleafe restored their two-goal advantage in the 71st minute when the unmarked Thomas drove home a long cross for his second goal of the night.

Watkins had much better luck in the 84th minute when his long cross from near the corner flag somehow swerved over Dilley’s head and into the roof of the net.

But Whyteleafe looked to have finally made sure of the points two minutes later when O’Flaherty broke free, running at least 30 yards, before driving home is second goal of the night.

Having indicated a minimum of six minutes of stoppage time, the Blues were given motivation to keep going and James Cottee saw a shot blocked on the line.

In the fifth minute of stoppage time, Sutherland got his second of the night from a cross.

Stoppages for injuries prolonged the match further, as did red cards for Oakins and Blues defender Tommy Moorhouse after an off-the-ball incident.

Met Police were awarded the resulting free kick which landed at Sutherland’s feet inside the six-yard box. His first shot was blocked on the line before he blazed over a gaping net with the final act of the game.
