A family in Dalton Avenue had a narrow escape last night when a faulty freezer set their kitchen alight.

The home owners were enjoying a night at a neighbours house when their kitchen caught alight at about 9.45pm last night.

One of the family members spotted the blaze when they returned home and immediately called the fire brigade.

A spokesman from the white watch at Mitcham fire station said: "We were at the house until 1am, the fire caused considerable damage to the kitchen and the lounge.

"Nobody was injured.

"The family were fire conscious and did all the right things, closing the door on the fire and calling for help immediately."

The spokesman said he wanted to remind people how important it is to have a smoke alarm installed in their homes.

He said: "Smoke alarms are really necessary, this fire happened at night, if the family had been sleeping they would need that extra warning to get out of the house safely."

Two fire engines and one fire investigation unit was sent to the scene.
