Sutton is now the safest place in London to travel by bus.

Some 243 offences were recorded on the borough's buses last year, the lowest number in the capital.

The number of crimes dropped by 45 per cent in the last five years.

Last year there were 65 incidents of violence against the person, down from 109 in 2005, and 19 robberies, down from 43 in 2005.

Mayor of London Boris Johnson said: “We have achieved huge reductions in crime by putting 450 more police on the network, creating safer transport teams in each borough, banning alcohol and heavily investing in CCTV cameras but we know there is more to do.”

"That is why we are planning to put another 413 officers on the network this year as part of an additional £42million for policing."

The chance of being a victim of crime on the capital’s bus network is now at its lowest since records began.
