The new Mayor of Wandsworth was on hand to cut the ribbon at the opening of a new eco-friendly community garden this weekend.

Councillor Jane Cooper visited the fruit and vegetable garden in Spencer Park, Wandsworth, on Saturday.

The Spencer Park Residents' Association, comprised of tenants of 33 flats, received a £7,500 eco-housing grant from the Tooting Housing Panel, after it was loaned the garden by Wandsworth Council for them to look after.

Stella Moni, chairperson of the residents' association, said: "It was a wonderful occasion and a successful event. The new mayor is wonderful, she is really involved in the community and we all had a lovely time with her."

The garden, which took two months to turn around and complete, will be maintained by the residents' association and includes such eco-features as a park bench made out of recycled plastic milk bottles.
