As barbeque season approaches fire fighters in Epsom are urging residents to be cautious after a discarded cigarette caused a fire at Swinley Forest in Berkshire destroying 740 acres of woodland.

The fire was fought by 300 fire fighters starting on May 2 this year and burned for one week with flames up to 15 metres high.

Crews from Epsom travelled 30 miles to fight the fire with Sutton and London fire brigades standing in to cover the Epsom area. After one of the driest springs on record, the chances of a barbecue accident getting out of control are significantly raised.

When lighting up the barbeque this summer, remember these simple safety steps. • Always have barbeques or fires in safe, designated areas. In the countryside they can quickly get out of control.

• Never start a barbeque with any petrol or flammable fluid.

• Site your barbeque away from fences, bushes and sheds.

• Keep a bucket of water or sand handy in case of emergencies.

• Never leave a barbeque unattended.

• Try to keep children and pets away from the immediate area.

• Dispose of your barbeque coals correctly waiting until fully cooled.

When using a gas barbeque: • Store gas cylinders outside and on a flat surface away from ignition sources and possible impact.

• Check your gas barbeque before using it including hoses and joints for signs of wear.

• If you suspect a leak turn off the cylinder before investigating and consult a qualified person if still unsure.
