Police gave bad drivers a talking to during an operation to weed out antisocial motorists.

The operation, which forms part of the Drive Smart campaign, took place in Terrace Road, Walton, on Wednesday, May 25.

During the day, 32 drivers were given a verbal warning by officers who caught them not wearing seatbelts or using a mobile phone at the wheel.

A further 20 fixed penalty notices were handed out for similar offences.

Three vehicles, where the owners were driving without insurance or a valid licence, were also seized during the joint venture between Surrey Police and Surrey County Council.

PC Jane Eames, Elmbridge casualty reduction officer, said: “Antisocial driving is the most common issue raised at neighbourhood panel meetings and the day of action involved local Safer Neighbourhood Teams working closely with our partners to tackle the problem.

“The activity was designed to target the issues which Elmbridge residents have raised and we made some excellent interventions to address selfish and antisocial driving.

“I hope this gives local people confidence that, together with our partners, we are listening to them and we will do our best to address the issues they raise.

“We cannot solve every problem but we are determined to do our best and have an impact which will contribute to the ongoing Drive Smart campaign.”
