Elderly people received a surprise this week when they had their meals on wheels delivered by the new mayor of Elmbridge.

Councillor John Sheldon and his wife, the mayoress Councillor Mary Sheldon, joined the community support service at Elmbridge Council on Tuesday, May 24, to deliver the meals to the residents at the Hersham Centre for the Community.

The pair were helping out to highlight volunteers’ week, which runs from June 1 until June 7.

They were joined by resident John Parkinson, who has been a volunteer for six months.

He said: “I really enjoy delivering the meals because I like to meet lots of people, as well as to help them live their lives comfortably. It’s also heart-warming to come across people who are always happy to see you.”

Coun Sheldon added: “I’m very impressed with the dedication of the volunteers who help deliver the meals and it’s especially reassuring to see that we have new recruits, like John, joining the volunteer ranks. Without them we would not be able to offer this crucial service to our more vulnerable residents.”

The council is looking for other volunteers to help out with the meals on wheels service, that delivers over 1,000 meals every week. Anyone interested should call 01372 474552 or email volunteering@elmbridge.gov.uk.
