Tom Ladyman won a $25,000 scholarship at the Intel sponsored International Science and Engineering Fair 2011. It was one of the largest awards at the fair which was held in Los Angeles this year.

He attends Sutton Grammar School for Boys and won the prestigious place through the National Science Competition 2011, which he was highly commended in (equivalent to joint 3rd place). Only four from the UK are entered each year, across science and engineering.

The award was inter disciplinary, ie, he competed against both his category and the entire fair, including categories such as biochemisty, environmental management and maths. It was sponsored by Agilent.

The project was a Robotic Spider which is designed to be an all terrain military surveillance vehicle capable of navigating all obstacles by using legs rather than conventional wheels or tracks. It has GPS, a wireless nightvision camera, a bidirectional radio link and a 3 axis accelerometer.
