By Barbara Holgate, Mitcham
I have just returned from a five-week stint assisting my sister in looking after her dying husband, which was a horrendous experience.
On my return, I discovered that on May 19 a national free end-of-life rights information line was launched.
This is the first of its kind to support people who are dying, their loved-ones, carers and professionals, by providing information on their existing end-of-life rights and how they can prepare for a good quality end of life, for example by making advance decisions or lasting powers of attorney.
I would have found this helpful when caring for my brother-in-law and a few years ago when I nursed my mother until her death.
Having seen the suffering, I will be completing an advance decision that sets out my preferences for treatment at the end of my life and will vote for anyone who will help get euthanasia accepted in this country.
The information line number is 0800 9992434 and details can be found at compassionindying.org.uk.
